SSI diver responsibility code

Dealing with the underwater world

  • Use only one swimmer if you can do it without touching anything
  • Do not swim or dive too close to the reef
  • Do not play or break choirs
  • Use labelled inlets/outlets for water
  • Do not disturb the sand, as it reduces visibility and suffocates the corals
  • Do not hunt or disturb animals
  • Do not touch animals unless properly trained
  • Do not feed animals
  • Don't take souvenirs from the sea - broken pieces of coral or empty snail shells still serve as a useful habitat
  • Place only one reef hook where it will not damage or disturb the reef
  • Don't disturb animals or habitats to improve your photo opportunity

Avoid rubbish

  • Never throw inorganic rubbish into the sea - plastic decomposes incredibly slowly
  • Minimise waste production: Use reusable coffee mugs and lunch boxes, glass or metal bottles and shopping bags.
  • Don't bring unnecessary packaging to the resort
  • Dispose of your waste in the most environmentally friendly way possible
  • If you smoke, dispose of cigarette butts in the appropriate receptacle, not on the ground or in the water

Environmental awareness

  • Commit to personally protecting the environment
  • Prevent others from causing harm through positive action and motivation
  • supporting useful projects and organisations dedicated to marine protection
  • If possible, pick up rubbish on your dives - but only if it doesn't cause more damage to the environment
  • If possible, cut hanging ropes and collect floating nets and plastics
  • Inform your partner or the crew on the surface if you were unable to remove the net.
  • Never eat shark fins, whale meat, turtle eggs, etc.
  • Immediately report violations of the ban on the use of marine animals as souvenirs

Responsible use of resources

  • Shower only as long as it takes to get clean, especially in areas with little capacity to store/purify water.
  • Wash your equipment in the container provided, and only when necessary - it is often enough to thoroughly clean the equipment at the end of the diving trip
  • Switch off lights when not in use
  • Using alternative transport or walking instead of driving
  • Avoiding unnecessary waste - food plans and shopping lists help save money and prevent you from buying unnecessary food that could go to waste.
