Pedra dos Valados Reserve

Portugal's Largest Protected Reef

especie

What is it?

Pedra do Valado is the largest shallow coastal rocky reef in Portugal, benefiting from unique natural conditions and supporting a unique marine biodiversity, with many species of commercial and conservation interest.

Why?

Pioneering habitat and marine biodiversity mapping studies carried out by the Algarve Marine Science Centre along the southern coast of Portugal (Lagos-Faro) have identified one of the richest areas in terms of biodiversity on this coast. Of the 1294 species identified, approximately 70% have been recorded here. The uniqueness of this region is further emphasised by the discovery of 45 new records for Portugal and, above all, 12 new species for science.

How?

United by a common interest, the Marine Sciences Centre, the Oceano Azul Foundation and the Municipalities of Albufeira, Lagoa and Silves promoted and stimulated, together with 76 entities, a unique, collective and innovative construction process that led to the presentation of a proposal for the creation of the first Marine Protected Area of Community Interest (AMPIC), the Algarve Reef Marine Nature Park - Pedra do Valado, whose main objectives are the conservation of natural values, the enhancement of small-scale fishing, the development of sustainable and environmentally-friendly tourist activities and education and dissemination that value the local natural and cultural heritage.

Where?

With approximately 156km2, it stretches from the Alfanzina Lighthouse (west) to the Albufeira Marina (east), covering the territories of Silves, Lagoa and Albufeira up to a distance of around 50 metres from the coast.
